Our History
The story of Hick’ry Pit starts in 1928, when Italian immigrant Emil Villa arrived in Oakland, California. Emil’s first venture wasn’t barbecue at all—it was a bakery. Drawing on his heritage and skills as a baker, he opened a small shop and quickly built a reputation for fresh bread and pastries. But fate had other plans. When the barbecue restaurant next door came up for sale, Emil saw an opportunity he couldn’t resist. He purchased the space, knocked down the wall between the two businesses, and launched what would become one of the Bay Area’s most beloved dining traditions.
The Birth Of Hick’ry Pit
Emil’s idea was simple but powerful: combine wood-smoked barbecue with homemade baked goods. Using a full wood fire instead of gas or propane, he created bold flavors that stood apart from anything else in the area. His ribs, tri-tip, and pulled pork developed a loyal following, while his bakery background gave customers everything from fresh bread to hearty desserts. This blend of comfort food and innovation set the tone for Hick’ry Pit’s identity—family-friendly, generous, and always focused on quality.
Growing With the Bay Area
Word spread fast, and Emil’s vision expanded into multiple locations across the Bay Area. By October 1958, he opened his sixth restaurant in Walnut Creek, a site that would go on to become a community institution. Through the decades, Hick’ry Pit adapted to changing tastes while never losing its roots in authentic barbecue. Breakfast became an all-day tradition, weekend brunches drew crowds, and the restaurant evolved into a gathering spot for families, students, and professionals alike. With each new generation of guests, Hick’ry Pit carried forward Emil’s promise: good food, fair value, and genuine hospitality.
Tradition Meets Today
Now, nearly a century after its founding, Hick’ry Pit is still serving the Bay Area with the same dedication to quality. We’ve kept Emil’s commitment to real wood-smoked meats alive, smoking our ribs, chicken, and tri-tip the old-fashioned way. At the same time, we’ve expanded our menu to include brunch favorites, hearty sandwiches, fresh salads, and cocktails that make any occasion special. We remain open seven days a week, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and we welcome guests on nearly every holiday—because we know traditions are built at the table.
Carrying the Legacy Forward
For over 65 years, the Walnut Creek Hick’ry Pit has been more than just a restaurant—it’s been a cornerstone of the community. Families celebrate milestones here, friends meet for happy hour, and generations return year after year for their favorite dishes. Whether you’re sitting down for a quiet breakfast, hosting a group for dinner, or enjoying our catering at your own event, Hick’ry Pit remains a place where food and family come first. Emil Villa’s vision continues to guide us: serve meals made with care, share them generously, and create an atmosphere where everyone feels at home.
Through four ownerships over the years—with the current team at the helm since 1997—we’ve preserved that heartfelt approach, ensuring every visit honors the past while welcoming the future.
