About Us
Our History
When you step into Hick’ry Pit, you’re tasting a tradition that began in 1928 with Emil Villa, an Italian immigrant who brought his passion for food to Oakland, CA. Starting as a baker, Emil’s path shifted when he seized the chance to buy the barbecue restaurant next door. With vision and grit, he tore down the wall, blending his homemade baked goods with wood-smoked barbecue to create Hick’ry Pit. His commitment to quality and detail made the restaurant an instant hit, delighting locals with bold flavors and warm hospitality.
By 1958, Emil’s success led to the opening of our Walnut Creek location at 1495 South Main Street, now the city’s oldest restaurant. Over 95 years, through four ownerships, we’ve stayed true to Emil’s legacy, serving wood-fired BBQ, hearty breakfasts, and fresh baked goods to families, friends, and food lovers. Today, under ownership since 1997, Hick’ry Pit remains a beloved Bay Area icon where you can savor nostalgic dishes and create memories across generations.
